RESIDENTS in the Marlborough area have been warned not to be taken in by a carpet cleaning company operating a “bait and switch” scam.
The company has been ringing householders in Burbage, Mildenhall, Aldbourne and Ramsbury offering carpet cleaning for a special offer of £8.99 for two rooms.
When the householder takes the bait, an engineer calls, who rubbishes the £8.99 offer and says it will do more harm than good. He recommends a more expensive option, which turns out to cost at least ten times as much.
PCSO Mark Braithwaite of Marlborough police said: “It is strictly illegal to do this and if anyone is faced with this situation they should inform the police immediately.
“As is so often the case, if it sounds too good to be true, that’s because it probably is.”
